Time to plug the Solaris Internals books again. Much (if not all) of
what we are discussing here is covered very nicely in those books.

Solaris Internals, Second Edition: Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris Kernel
Architecture

and

Solaris Performance and Tools: DTrace and MDB Techniques for Solaris 10
and OpenSolaris

See http://www.sun.com/books/solaris_series.html for details.

Get them. Read them. Love them.

I think it's worth noting that %b is not *necessarily* useless - but
moreover that it can tell lies in terms of 'saturation'. You may be able
to get to 100%b and not yet be saturated because the disk controller /
raid controller might be able to do more, in spite of the fact that 100%
of the interval, the device was busy doing something.

So - It's as much about understanding how it applies to your disk subsystem.

For what it's worth - for me, it's little more than a wet finger in the
air... ;) (Then again, sometimes, that wet finger can tell you a lot...
Like - Don't lick your finger after scratching your bum...)

Cheers!

Nathan.
