If you want to by pass the use of a Windows box, you can simply call Verizon
and they'll activate the account.
Verizon uses PPPOE (Point to Point Protocol Over Ethernet) as their means of
authenticating onto their network. The easiest thing to do is to purchase a
decent router (Linksys WRT-54G comes to mind for WiFi) that has a PPPOE
authentication module built in so that you are always authenticated and
don't have to run any special PPPOE software on any of your machines.
While on the subject of routers and Linux... Linksys also sells a router
(WRT-54GL) that runs on Linux and allows you to either use third party,
Linux based, firmware... or to hack it yourself. This is also true of some
of the early WRT-54G series routers, which I use.

I use Verison DSL (the low speed one). No problems.
You need a windows machine to set up your account. Once set up, you can
replace it with your Linux box.
Use an ethernet connection to the Westell modem.
I found the modem to be problematic in establishing a connection. You must
push the reset button on the back and try several times to establish the
link.
It is best to leave it connected all the time.
