Yeah, actually I think this may be related to the problem I was having. 
I have 512 MB of RAM in my Inspiron (which was a really worthwhile
upgrade, incidentally), so you may have different results with the
installation than I had.  When I last was messing with my laptop, it
looked like it was only seeing 256 MBs all of a sudden, which might have
accounted for some of my problems; however, I think there may have been
something else going on as well.  While it would be nice to be able to
try to the live CD, if you don't have much RAM it might be more prudent
to try an install using the Alternate Install CD, which is not a live CD
(and features a text-based installer, IIRC), so that it is less resource
intensive.
