*Full Disclosure: I work for Hillcrest Labs*

We've recently released a consumer version of our "Loop" pointer.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001U1LX3Q/ref=cm_sw_su_dp

It shows up as a standard USB HID Mouse, and therefore it will 'Just work'
with basically any OS that supports USB mice. It definitely has the range to
pick up across a large lecture hall, and it will let you move your hand
pretty naturally to control the pointer on screen. (It also has a 'park'
button which will stop mouse movement in case you feel like getting gesture
happy.) It will map to standard mouse buttons (not spacebar), but you could
remap these in your X configuration if you like.

In addition to being a pretty good presentation pointer, this thing is
hackable: we have an LGPL driver (http://libfreespace.hillcrestlabs.com/ )
which will get you access to all of the accelerometer and motion data that
the device pushes out. (If you just want to use it as a mouse, you don't
need this driver).
