And "the hoi polloi" is a similar confusion in itself, for "hoi" is the 
Greek definite article.

Other examples of apparent redundancy, are
Cakes -> Keks (German), plural Kekse
Baby -> bebis (Swedish), plural bebissar
and there are many more such examples.
