I agree with you Liz....and I think the bars are ugly, especially on these old houses
and for smoke alarms, motion, someone trying to get in, etc. the best, most proven alarm system is a dog, a big one, like an apartment/ house  friendly Great Dane!
Imagine one burgular's face (or underpants) when he cut through the screen of the open kitchen window at 2 A.M. and came face to face with a Great Dane!
