I'm just hoping to use an external USB HD that I want to be able to move
from machine to machine as needed (XP to Linux). So there is an 'ext3'
filesystem out there I can format the drive with? Its google-time.....

IMHO you can have fat32 formatted disks with > 128GB. BUT you can't format them in Windows. Most of the external disks you buy are already fat32 formatted. If not, use some Linux boot CD (damnsmalllinux.org, knoppix.org) to format it.
