Michael, It appears that the alac codec I have is not working, and that is why I could not decode Apple Lossless files.
When executing alac, I get the fatal message that the kernel is "too old" followed by a segmentation fault. The solution was another modification to SS's convert.conf file, and use [mplayer] to do the conversion instead.
