I don't know why:) But they way things work I would guess because there wasn't (enough) interest. One way to go would be to offer taking on maintainer ship for a slimserver package. Then I don't think it would be too hard to get it included. Btw. who is maintaining the slimserver package in universe? Is it still active? It's only at 6.3 right now. I think there are several issues involved (The intention is that each point below should just work (TM) on default install. So whatever causes problems for people today should be sorted by the packagers/maintainers. Also the list could be regrouped/extended): 1. Customized ubuntu package of slimserver. Entails making sure only slimserver works. E.g. no libpath-class-perl, LANG, etc problems. 2. 1+ a set of core dependencies such as mplayer, codecs, convert.conf, perhaps some plugins. 3. 1+2+ tools for ripping, tagging, albumart. 4. 1+2+3+4+ semi-automatic ripping, tagging, slimserver import. 5. 1+2+3+4+ fully automatic, perhaps querying the user in case of tag-info not found etc. Obviously the difficulty is increasing, with 4 and 5 requiring quite some work I would think. Also I'm not sure about a central repository for all distros. Slimserver itself is not that bad since it is interpreted. But many of the other apps are binary and will often be distro specific. I know alien etc. tends to work. But there are significant differences between distros, and if the goal is "just works", then I think it is almost impossible to make universal packages. E.g. even debian packages does not always work in ubuntu. What package format should one choose?
