Ah, I may have replied a bit hastily not realising you where using Ubuntu Server. Anyway, so sound is not working at all? Do you have a file called /dev/dsp? There should be some .wav files in /usr/share/sounds, use one of these and try 'cp /usr/share/sounds/wavfile.wav /dev/dsp'. Do you hear anything when doing that? What is the output of lspci?
If your soundcard is not working you might get better feedback if you post at ubuntuforums.org.
