Ah, I may have replied a bit hastily not realising you where using
Ubuntu Server. Anyway, so sound is not working at all? Do you have a
file called /dev/dsp? There should be some .wav files in
/usr/share/sounds, use one of these and try 'cp
/usr/share/sounds/wavfile.wav /dev/dsp'. Do you hear anything when
doing that? What is the output of lspci?

If your soundcard is not working you might get better feedback if you
post at ubuntuforums.org. When you have sound working you can get back
to getting softsqueeze to work.
