Just for grins, here are the results for the Buffalo LinkStations on which I used to run SS/SC until December 2008. The last versions of SC I loaded on them were 7.2, and 7.3.2, respectively. Both had been reflashed to FreeLink (debian). They streamed FLAC and MP3 fine, including to multiple sync'd SBs. The web ui was slow. And it took around an hour to scan 4000 tracks. But they still stream music perfectly adequately.
