I have tested the hdmi with standard 16/44.1K mp3 and aac files.I have not done much test with hdmi. A few others including myself noticed that the sound did not sound right via hdmi. When I say the problem is with UAC 2.0 that is related to my dac and with switching between different sample rates. I am not sure the cause of the distortion with hdmi. I may have to do more testing with the hdmi output with different alsa settings. Are you pipping the sound direct to the hdmi output in alsa or are you using certain settings?
