Yes that is correct, actually I already have made an option so you press
the button "save config file to USB" then your working config file is
copied and renamed to newconfig.cfg on an attached USB flas drive. 
If you need it now, I can upload it, otherwise I prefer to wait a few
days, so a few more tweaks can be included.

Then when you want to update piCorePlayer you burn the new version to
your SD card. Attach your USB flash drive and boot. Then the new
piCorePlayer will use your saved config file from the USB drive, and
after that you can remove the USB flash card.

I really don't know how to do that (I'm not a programmer by trade, I'm
trying to learn while using improving on the piCorePlayer). If you have
a clear idea how to do that, please tell me, and maybe we can find a
solution.
