I have been following this thread which I believe is the same Craig.

I can't see how you can fix this issue, if it is true, that they didn't
burn a MAC address on the wifi adaptor during manufacturing.

Maybe the newer wifi adaptors are OK, but because of the firmware
work-around the hard MAC address doesn't get used.

I think the older ones will still require manually setting the MAC
address somehow.
