After the initial X installation there is kernel panic because X
installer has moved some files that the old Macs need. This is
_normal_ in the unsupported Macs.

X installer may have also de-blessed 9.1 System Folder in the same
partition, which prevents booting into 9. You can re-bless 9.1 System
Folder by:

1. Put Mac OS 9.x installer CD (or some other bootable CD) in after
the initial kernel panic. Do a forced re-boot by hitting
control-command-startupkey, then hold down the c-key to boot into the
9.x installer CD.

2. Take either System or Finder file out of folder
Volume:System:Library:CoreServices:

3. Take either System or Finder file out of the Mac OS 9.1 System
Folder, and put it back -- 9.1 System Folder should now be blessed.
(Just opening & closing the 9 system Folder may be enough).

4. Put System or Finder file back into folder
Volume:System:Library:CoreServices:

It seems that the /CoreServices folder is blessed with fake
System/Finder files and you have to somehow de-bless that folder
before 9.1 System Folder can be blessed.
