Hi,
You can download POPMonitor for OSX, and check your mailbox. It sounds 
to me like you have some monster size file or spam in there. POPMonitor 
will show what is on the server and let you delete everything you don't 
want. I have had this problem with Mail, but also with other clients in 
the past. I don't think it is the volume of mail as such, 'cause I get 
between 100 and 300 mails daily.
