Large messages can cause hangups. Most POP accounts treat mail access in a batch. If you access your account and start downloading, and something interrupts the download, it wont clear your mailbox. When you re-access it the download will start all over again. Apple's mail program has been very good for me. I've used Netscape, IE, Eudora and Claris mail in the past, at various times, the Apple mail has done as good, or better, job than any of those. I agree on the large message volume. I recently returned from 9 days overseas and had 600+ messages waiting. They downloaded fine. I think Apple's mail program is one of the pluses of OS X. Just my experience. Your mileage may vary.
