i doubt that hd will work. OSX does not usually work with FWB drives. assuming you tried to format it in OS9 and failed, try to format it again with drive setup in os 9. now that it has been formatted in FWB, it may work.
or CharisMac Anubis. it will format a difficult drive and i don't think it uses anything proprietary to do it. if you have an old copy of apples scsi drive formatter, that might do the trick. i'm sure it is on their site available for download. i'm surprised OSX just doesn't see it as a drive that needs reformatting and do it.
