Ok, lets back up a bit.

Is the partition on your ATA HD in the first 8 GB of the drive?

With 10.2 and many ATA cards, the hardware is now correctly identified 
as IDE not SCSI, and so these machines fall prey to the same thing that 
plagues  Beige G3's and early iMacs: OS X needs to be in an 8GB 
partittion at the beginning of the disk.

Second. What ATA card are you using? If it's a Sonnet Tempo ATA133 or 
Trio card, there's a firmware update,version 3.25 that fixes these cards 
to work properly under 10.2. I was unable to boot from my ATA drive 
attached to the trio card until I did both of these things.
