wow that's a new one. I never heard that one before...I hope you have a 
supported drive!!
Are you trying to format from OS 9.x? if not give that a shot...better 
yet, boot off your OS 9.x CD, then format. Before you do, try zapping 
the pram a few times.

oh wait! I think I see the issue... just like when you install new 
extensions, the new driver won't be *active* on your hard drive until 
you re-boot.  So maybe that's what's going on. You were able to format 
the drive, yes? Apple's drivers were probably loaded but set in an 
inactive state. When you rebooted to OS 9, did you hard drive mount? 
Were you able to save stuff to it (then read from it?)

if so, I think you successfully reformatted with apple's disk utility. 
try loading OS X on it now...
