The place I go around here for used equipment is CPUsed. And they have squat that's SCSI right now, and when they do, it ain't that much cheaper. Still over $100. Never seen a SCSI drive on a store shelf for less. But I'll 'get up off my bum' as you say :) and look a little harder. That is good advice. I might find a better deal. As for the $10 drive you mention, well ... there IS a surplus store around here that has spare tech parts like drives for that cheap, but they are stacked in bins and you usually have to buy quite a few of any of their tech components to find one that's fully functional (besides these bin drives are almost never SCSI they are mostly IDE around here and the rest are something else). But that route just always seemed like a bad idea for me -- I mean, this is my DATA, right?! Just makes me queasy to think what those drives might have been through -- and that's BEFORE somebody likely loaded them into that bin with something probably quite like a shovel. I take very good care of my equipment. Maybe a $10 drive that's been used and abused and then thrown in a bin is good enough for YOUR data.
The idea that I will be 'saving' something by going with this dodgy piece of equipment over my 'apps and data on the network' setup which is perfectly functional and reliable, is a total mirage. More likely I will soon be losing something.
No. I *will* take a second look for cheaper drives. But not in the bins. Thanks, anyway. Maybe I'll check out what's available in the area of PC SCSI drives that are confirmed as being Mac-compatible. This is an avenue I have not explored sufficiently.
Paul.
P.S. Man, I am one long-winded bastard.

4GB drives are being given away for free - or thrown in the bin - all the
time these days. Now, I grant you I'm in London, not Canada, but I've just
paid under 5 (UKP) for >1GB of SCSI disk - the postage for one that was
going in the bin.
It's not going to cost you CAN$x00s.
