Have you looked into getting an ATA card and and IDE drive? I don't 
know about Canada, but here in Illinois I can get an ATA card for 
$40-50USD and a decent new 40-60GB drive for $100. $150 for a new 40GB 
drive isn't a bad deal. Plus you can take advantage of all the new 
CD-RW devices and such.

Just an idea.
