I don't see why this shouldn't work. Although, I would check into 
whether the Jackhammer is supported under OSX. I don't think that it 
is, but don't take my word for it.

I haven't had a problem with 9.2.2 on both my 8500 and my S900. It does 
seem more responsive than in the past.

Even a G3/300 would be an improvement. It is a substantially better 
chip, it lags the 604 in Floating-point, but that is rarely an issue. 
When it comes to OSX, G3/300 is the minimum to get good performance 
from it. Also, a G3 is REQUIRED in order to use Jaguar. 604s can only 
go to 10.1.5, and Jaguar is *much* faster than 10.1x.

My opinion, go for a nice G4/400. Not too expensive and a good 
performer. Of course, the exact processor upgrade depends on what you 
want to do.......
