I've been lurking on this list for some time. I'm finally getting serious about attempting to install X on my machine at home, but have a couple of questions before I do.
I have a 9650/350. The only drive in it currently is a 4.5GB 68-pin UltraWide SCSI. The machine has a FWB Jackhammer UltraWide SCSI PCI card that the drive is hooked to. I have my eye on an 18GB UltraWide SCSI drive for $70. Will I be able to run X from this setup? Another question I have is for those running 9.2.2 on unsupported machines. Is it stable in your experience? At least as good as 9.1? I read on the "OS 9 Forever" site, that in 9.2.2 the Finder was noticeably faster and Open Transport was more stable too. If this isn't the case, I see no good reason to upgrade to that. The other question I have is for those with 9600's with 300mHz or faster 604e's who have put G3 or G4 upgrade cards in them. Do you think the speed gain from a 400-450mhz card is worth the investment? (Discounting any Altivec speed gains). Would you advise getting a faster card to really see an appreciable speed gain, or does any G3 or G4 upgrade make a lot of difference if you're running X? Thanks for any help or opinions!
