I've been keeping a little up on this thread and thought I'd add my "minimal" X experience. I actually installed 10.1 on a 7600 with a 132MHZ 604 and 64MB RAM. I think it had a 1.2-2 GB HDD, so yes it was "barebones" minimal and very painful to use. It did work though.
