I hear the next generation XboX is going to be based on the Power PC.
And IIRC it's got an nVidia GPU.
Now wouldn't that make a heck of a hack. :)
OS XboX.
It's kinda funny that xbox is changing because that is basically Microsoft admitting defeat.
The purpose of xbox didn't have anything to do with gaming. Microsoft loses $100 per unit sold. The purpoose was to get young programmers to learn Wintel code. The idea is that with millions of users, the game software writers would have to learn Wintel code. As they aged, the transition (and future) of Wintel software would be assured. It didn't work, no one converted. Most of the companies that did where either bought outright by Microsoft, or coerced with incentives.
By switching, Microsoft will be adopting the likely standard platform of the future, as it appears that Sony & Nintendo will both be using similar processors. Thus, they are giving up and say "if we can't beat them, we'll join them."
I used to think that Apple was going to port Aqua & OS X over to Wintel because they haven't RISC optimized it. By leaving it CISC optimized they cost us PowerPC users something like 30% wasted cycles, but make cross platform porting much easier. I'm not so sure xbox converting to PPC is good?
Did you see that the Linux hackers cracked the xbox and have Linux booting natively on xbox? That WAS a heck of a hack. :)
