I have an old 8600 with a burned out processor card. I would like to upgrade it and put Panther on board. If memory serves correctly, the least I will need is a G3 processor card, an ATA PCI card, and an IDE drive. Is that a pretty good assessment? What other suggested upgrades are there for the 8600 that would be wise? Will the AV in/out board still be usable?

A year ago this would have been a reasonable plan. Today, regretfully, your best bet is to pool the money for the upgrades and pick up a used G4. To run Jaguar/Panther you need a fast G3, ATI 128 or Radeon, and at least 256MB memory. If you want to through in an ATA card & drive that is reasonable. In rough numbers you are out at least $250 for the minimums ($150 CPU, $50 Memory, $50 video (if you flash it) or $100+ for Mac) and more if you through in a ATA card and drive. After all that, you get an unsupported OS X install with small issues. Someone else will have to speak about the 8600 AV, but my guess would be no. Ryan has done great work to support those of us with souped up Old World Macs, but at this point starting with a carcass (which is what it sound like you have) and adding all those components in does not make much sense. Take the money and get a used G4 (best would be one with an AGP card) and you will get really good use out of it. At this point I can see taking my 9600 (g4/800, 768MB, 50 Gig ATA, Radeon Mac Edition, USB, Firewire) and making it my secondary system.
