They all speak the truth. Buying bits to make the carcase run Panther isn't good value. Now if you happen already to have the bits, or can beg/borrow/steal them from elsewhere, that's a different story.

But don't despair. An 8600 will make a great platform for installing an alternative UNIX, like one of the BSDs (check which work with Old World ROMs, though) or Yellow Dog Linux. This you could use to hone your more fundamental UNIX skills, or use to create a server node or second node for network use. If you know all this stuff already, that's fine. If not, it'll help you to get to grips with the Dark Side of Panther over time.

I have an old 8600 with a burned out processor card. I would like to upgrade it and put Panther on board. If memory serves correctly, the least I will need is a G3 processor card, an ATA PCI card, and an IDE drive. Is that a pretty good assessment? What other suggested upgrades are there for the 8600 that would be wise? Will the AV in/out board still be usable?

A year ago this would have been a reasonable plan. Today, regretfully, your best bet is to pool the money for the upgrades and pick up a used G4.

I have to agree with this. Your money is much better spent on eBay and used G4 - or even a used B&W G3!
