Hi I thought I'd post the results of my work on fixing poor Ethernet performance problems with an AsanteFAST 590 10/100 card and a souped up 9600 - -
I was able to comprehensively rule out Duplex clashes by dint of direct (no switches) connection and checking things like ifconfig in the terminal. I got a Sonnet Presto Gigabit board (thinking ahead for the card's next location ;-) and with the drivers installed, got a massive boost in performance. Looking at the activity monitor (10.3) I could see a steady continuous flow of packets. Just like 100M ought to be! and much faster than at 10M One problem that surfaced during transfer of cd image sized files were the occasional kernel error, leading to loss of connectivity. Switching off cache (sonnet G4/450) and other tricks didn't fix things. However a thorough check of the RAM under OS9 led to a dodgy 128MB dimm. Without it, the machine runs a treat (now 10.3.3 server) Out of curiosity I tried directly connecting at Gigabit to a 1.25G Powerbook. Worked fine! although the rate was scarcely any higher than at 100M (not that I was really expecting any real increase!)
