Integrating IE into the desktop has nothing to do with Windows Explorer.
windows Explorer is a prettier version of File Manager from WindoWs 3, and
it was introduced with Windows 95 *before* IE was integrated with the desktop:
Windows 95 didn't come with an integrated desktop, and it didn't become
standard until Windows 98.

In addition, the pretty interface isn't the problem, using the same API to
access trusted and untrusted resources is the problem.

Um, no, ANY application that uses the MSHTML control can be exploited: that
includes Outlook, Windows Media Player, and Real Player.
