Look in your system log for hardware related errors associated with the time you have the SPOD ; I recently had a B&W display those very symptoms. The log was full of USB errors, it turned out that the USB hub in the Apple Studio Display attached to the system was bad.

"CPU Director" from Powerlogix is a good L2 Control Panel that works great. I've had problems with the XPF L2 cache control, but CPU Director has been good for me (it's freeware). You can install it and enable (or check) the L2 without needing to reboot which is nice.Cleaning the caches might help some, but I think your L2 isn't working.

Bruce, Roger and Kris. Thank you all for your help. I employed all the above suggestions. I was having a USB Hub problem and that might have contributed to the quits that I was getting. Time will tell on that. The thing that did the job (so far) was CPU Director. The processor use has gone down to a familiar level and I have been able to do things without hangs or the dreaded color ball coming in to play. I also installed Panther Cache Cleaner to do its job automatically. So far all is great and your help was fantastic.
