For the cache, I highly recommend NOT using the cache control in XPF 3 and instead using CPU Director from Powerlogix. It has been extremely stable in my 9600/G4/800. As for the OS issue, which applications are running when it stalls and which apps quit because of the Java problems?Okay David. I have installed CPU director and have been running it since yesterday with resulting short term surges by the processor and a maintenence of an average of about 25% usage showing in the MenuMeter. Basically, that is fixed and I will check out any options offered by the CPU prefs to see if I can improve performance.
As for the Java quits, non has happened since I installed the above. A program called jBidWatcher, a non Apple app was a constant quitter when Java went. Sometimes Safari quit, some apps like Illustrator, QuarkXpress and Filemaker, wouldn't open, I would just get the icon bouncing in the dock and then they would go away. This behavior was repeatable but didn't happen all the time. The quitting of jBWatcher might be a bug in the app. My real problem was the choking up of the processor which exhibited hangs and the bitch- oops, beach ball going on and off with every move. I hadn't had this when I successfully installed Panther some months ago. I don't know if the processor problem was responsible for the quits and no openers.
Yes I know B&W is supported but mine "sometimes" exhibits same occasional app quitting. For some reason it's more likely if Font Book is open (manages some 500 fonts - I work in print environment) and / or but not necessarily confined to when classic is running (this does make sense).
Mostly Illustrator 10.0.3, and occasionaly Safari
