I also had the CDR reading problem on my 8600 - same exact symptoms. It would read normal CD-ROMs fine, and once in a while a CDR would mount, but usually 0S9 would spit it out and OSX would just sit there trying to read it for a long long time. I think the multi-speed drives they put in the 8600s were sketchy. I swapped it out for a slower drive from another machine and now it works great (although still pretty slow under 0SX though).
