This is my 1st post here, so, bare with me,I'm running Panther on a Power Mac 8600 with 672 meg ram and a 500 mhz Neupowr G3 upgrade. My problem is that I have no control over the sound,It stays wide open even with the sound set to mute, iTunes does control it as far as listening to music , but that's about the only thing that does change it. All alerts, effects and speech are loud as it can get.
any help is greatly appreciated !
You have ran into one of the bugs that nearly everyone running an Old World Mac with XPFacto has sorry! My machine a Umax clone does let me mute the sound by carefully dragging the sound control at the top of the screen in the finder all the way to the bottom. It sometimes takes a couple of tries. It may also be possible to turn off in one of the control panels system sounds . As you have found apps like iTunes , Apple DVD player etc. sound controls all seem to work. My work around. I plugged in a set of external speakers that require power to run. On my machine and most I would think using the out sound plug turns off the internal speaker. This controls the sound fine as it has a volume control and I can leave off except when i need sound. Been running this way for several years. Speakers can be bought cheap even fairly good quality ones aren't all that much money and there are used ones as well. Hope this helps Will S
