Are 9600s candidates for OSX, given, say, a processor upgrade?
curios...
Peter, Oslo
Depending on which 9600 you have, yes... with some changes.
My 9600/350 with a Sonnet G3-500 card was able to run OS X 10.3.9.
First, I had to replace the original TT128 video card with an ATI
Rage card; I also installed up to 9.2.2 using OS 9 Helper from OS 9
Forever; then had 2 HD's in the unit, the original 4 GB & a 74 GB
drive- I partitioned the 74 into 3 parts, equal, and installed OS X
on the first partition, using one of the others for OS 9.2.2, and the
last for files. etc. I then cloned OS X onto the original 4 GB
drive, for emergency start-up, as needed.
I had 1 GB of RAM, 2 USB cards (6 ports total), a Yamaha F1 CD
Writer, the floppy, which didn't work under X, a ZIP 100 drive
(original) & the CD ROM drive (original).
It ran X OK, but it gave me a good feeling for it- now have a new
iMac G5 17", running X 10.4.3.
I sold the 9600, and it is still up & running...
YMMV,
Peter
