You shouldn't need to hold onto "c" longer than it takes to start booting from the CD.

Now  I put the disc in and get no action or sound from the CD tray and
no icon appears on the desk top.

If you mean that it's still booting to OS 9 just boot the CD again and do the installation over.

If you mean it's not booting to an OS at all, with or without "c" held down, try zapping the PRAM (programmable random access memory that holds the boot preferences) by booting with CMD, OPT, P and R all held down until you get a second "bong" sound... then see what happens.
