Ah. Well, as my original message said, one of my machines is SCSI based;
I don't think it's LVD, but it's the Apple-shipped drive with 2
Apple-shipped HDs on it. The third machine's SCSI HD was dead.

The IDE machine has an IDE controller fitted and I'm not using the
onboard UltraATA port at all.

The instability follows the twin-screen setup around and seems
independent of the SCSI or IDE subsystem. I can't really tell any
performance difference between the SCSI and IDE machines - both do
reasonaby for their age. If anything, the IDE machine's bigger, newer
drives seem to be marginally faster.
