We've created several cross-platform multimedia apps in MetaCard. If the
format you're using is QuickTime, we found that MPEG is one suitable format
for playback on Mac and Windows systems. I can't tell you the specifics
behind what encoding works best, but I can tell you that *usually* if an
MPEG movie plays under QT on a Mac system, it should play on Windows as
well. Be sure to test as much as possible. Also note that you may need to
provide download info for Windows folks who don't have QuickTime installed.

The problem here (at least as Scott Raney explains it) is that MOV, AVI, etc
are formats, or wrappers if you will, and each format can employ different
types of encoding. We've seen some movies that were apparently formatted as
MPEG play fine on Mac and Win systems, and others that didn't. I'd expect
that using one of the encoding schemes specifically supported by QuickTime
would allow cross-platform playback.
