Well, I hardly think Realsoft would stop any attempts on making a
converter that converts from R3D files to whatever else. Conversion
between formats is a big issue; people tend to get hired on what package
they know, not always are they required to know a specific package. As I
have read, not too familiar with this, nor am I eligeble to fall into
this category of peopel :-)
Ok, I admit I didn't think about the libraries, but still I think this
is a lockdown on the users of other software. AND, I read max as being
all files, but are model files still allowed to create exporters for?

Thus, I find it really odd that Microstation 8 onward is able to
read/write autocad .dwg files just as it was its own format.
It just reminds me on the old days where some company made a medical
scanner of some sorts, then they needed THEIR extremely expensive
software to view the image file! Others was not allowed to create
viewers or converters for this file. I thought those kind of days were
over.

its own format.. try opening a realsoft file in Max..
Just as in realsoft, max gives you the option to export to obj
format or others, and any converter software most likely uses max
libraries in the process, that's why you need an installation. so if I
was you, I'd ask around in a max forum, if somebody would be so kind to
convert your files for you. Hope that works for you.
