How watermark is generated in sql DDL statement

Hi:
   In sql API , the declaration of watermark is realized by ddl statement .
But which way is it implemented?
  * PeriodicWatermark *  or   *PunctuatedWatermark*？
  There seems to be  no explanation on the official website.
