Struts-EL gives you the ability to use expressions in the Struts tags. I think it's more than a convenience... for example, how would you rewrite the code above if you could not use an expression in the 'value' attribute?
Struts-EL tags are a must if you aren't on JSP 2.0. No debating this - Discussion over:)
