The issue I have is that will break backward compat. Create an issue in jira to see others reactions. Note: http://archiva.apache.org/docs/1.4-M4-SNAPSHOT/userguide/virtual-repositories.html section "Merged index". I know people using that (including my current company). BTW I agree that will be more following a "de facto" standard.
