Basically, Merlin is a bit more advanced and complex but is most actively
developed.  Fortress is simpler and based on the original designs of ECM.
You can start with either container.  The differences will be in how you
"assemble" your application but not in how you program you components.  By
"assemble" I mean what you configuration files will look like, how to
configure your meta data and how you package the application.

But in terms of how you actually program the components, very little should
differ.  As long as your services/components are only dependent on the
Avalon framework jar, then you shouldn't have too much trouble running the
application under Fortress or Merlin.  There are some exceptions to this
case, but at this point in the game, you shouldn't worry about it too much.
