Hello everybody,

I just wanted to write a comment from a users point of view on the
subject of web-download of references :
How often has it happened that a colleauge has sent you an email
"have a look at this paper" and an attached pdf file ?
Would you go then , type some caracteristics in your web-search
interface to find the paper in the web and then download the
reference into your database --- or simply type the reference ?

I agree fully that it is nice that when you want to get yourself into
a new subject area and you do a keyword based search on some web
based bibliographic database and get some hundrets of references
back, that then you just click : "download references in database"
and that's it.
But we should not forget that these hundrets of downloaded references
are nearly useless before you have screened them, deteled the
unrelevant, understood the articles, wrote some comments, added your
own comprehensible keywords, classified into groups, reread, changed
comments and gourps and finally found some that are that important
that you want to cite them in your next paper ... and then you need
"cite as you write" .....

I just wanted to but this comment out here for discussion as in
nearly all of the mailing lists I follow that concern bibliographic
programms the main focus is on "downloading web based references" and
then format the citation.
I won't argue the importance of these actions, but it would be nice
to have some discussion about concepts that help the scolar actually
work with these references. The whole bit between "put in the
reference" and "cite it". In my experience " the bit between" is much
more time consuming that the other too and a good bibliographic
program should provide utilities that helt in this.

best regards

Oliver
