If you relicense the code under an Apache license and your company is fine by 
that this is not an issue.

It’s going to depend on your contact with them (which doesn’t contain a clause 
about this it seems) and what country / state the contract was signed in.

For instance in the US generally your employer owns what you work on, sometimes 
even outside of work location and hours, here in Australia that is not the case.

Again if the code is relicensed under an Apache 2.0 license (and your company 
is fine with that) then the above issue goes away.

Given it was licensed under GPL previously on a public repository it would seem 
to me that they are OK with sharing and letting people use the code.
