I have now upgraded that machine to Xubuntu 12.04 and LibreOffice 3.5.4 and it still has the same problem. The main difference is that the Xfce gdm seems to think the screen is a single monitor with 3840x1020 resolution, but LO still can't go past the 1920x divide when it starts the writer window. This is somewhat interesting because the splash panel for LO comes up on whichever screen where the mouse is, but the writer not so.
