Have you tried renaming your User Profile to reset all the settings back to 
factory defaults?

I am not getting the same problem on Ubuntu 10.04, i haven't yet tried with 
12.04.  So i don't think it should be happening with Xubuntu either but i don't 
know how to dig around the relevant settings.  I thought those settings were 
part of the DE's settings?  Renaming the User Profile would help show whether 
the LO settings have gone wrong or whether it is part of the OSes settings.

I have not raised this as an issue in the OS forums because it is a LO
startup problem that (at least now) transcends two Linux OS levels and
two different GUIs/GDMs.
