I'm having some trouble opening a legal pleading .doc, which has some line
numbers on the left side of the page, in the form of a table in a frame in
the header. MS Word opens it just fine, but LibreOffice 3.6 and 4.0.0.3 both
seem to have the frame extending past the edges of the page, with the page
count increasing until LibreOffice crashes by running out of memory.

The attached file is a .doc, and converting it to .docx fixes the problem
(stupid frames), but I have many other .doc files like it, and re-saving
each one isn't a desirable solution.

I tried opening the document with Writer (4.0.03), Abiword, and Calligra. Writer crashed and the other two opened something but it did look correct either one.

My thought would be to try a headless conversion for *.doc to *.docx in Terminal. This will make new copies of the files in the appropriate format on your system.

In Linux the command would be like this when you in the folder where the *.doc files are:
/opt/libreoffice4.0/program/soffice --headless --convert-to docx *.doc

Out of curiosity can you save the *.docx format to *.odt and it look correct in *.odt?
