Andras,

Thank you for your detailed and informative response. I have searched the
threads quite a bit but unfortunately I couldn't find anything that described
the config necessary for running part of the application on a controller node.

I understand that it would be ideal to run the active controller on a physical
node of its own. However, I think from a processing/load point of view that
perhaps it would be acceptable in the context of a a two physical node cluster
to run the active controller and standby app on one node and the standby
controller and active application on the other.

I wouldn't expect you to divulge any particular proprietary information about
your own appilication but I would appreciate it very much if you could give me
pointers as to the format/layout of the "AppConfig.xml" in order to run the
application on the same node as the controller? I am not quite sure what to
change. In the Avsv demo appication it defines the node instances PL_2_3 and
PL_2_4 as payload, is it persmissable to define PL_2_1 in such a way despite
the fact that it is also a controller?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Such questions have been
raised recently many times. I could not find the corresponding emails at
first glance but I'm sure there are some threads on them.

Other comments inline.

We have done the same and it worked even
with virtual machines (2 virtual machines running controllers and the
application).
So actually there do not seem to be any specific prohibitive reason why
this could not be done. However, every time when this comes to discussion
the OpenSAF gurus say that it is not recommended, as in this case you need
to take care to avoid starvation of OpenSAF processes. And this is true.
Unfortunately, what we saw that absolutely underpins this caveat. So you
should be very cautious with doing this. Also see Hans' recent thread "[Users]
Help with controller fail-over issues?". He had some relating problems,
I think.

We succeeded in running not the avsvdemo
but our application on the controller (using only one controller) and truly
only the appconfig needed to be changed.

You may try running one controller and
one payload configuration. And run the application primarily on the payload
so the controller is only used for standby in mostly. However, in this
case your whole system will probably crash if the controller dies out,
but I am not 100% sure of this.

I hope this helped.

Andras
