It seems the issue has something to do with taglib. Here is the VLC
bug report that I found for Fedora 13:

A workaround is (re)moving
/usr/lib64/vlc/plugins/meta_engine/libtaglib_plugin.so.
Another workaround is running vlc with MALLOC_CHECK_=1 vlc.

Seems like the best solution would be to remove the libtaglib_pulgin
so long as there isn't any adverse affects. Maybe it is possible to
pass a compile flag to not compile the plugin?
